Grandmaster Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen Doesn’t Play at Life
2025-01-22
Chess and politics – two worlds full of strategy, challenges, and tough decisions. LFMI President Elena Leontjeva invites an open conversation with Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, chess grandmaster, recently concluded Speaker of the Seimas, and leader of the Liberal Movement, about how these seemingly different worlds intersect.“Chess develops two important qualities – the ability to win with honor and to lose with honor, which is especially important in politics and, even more so, in a democracy,” says the politician. When asked if she agrees with the saying that life is a theater or a game, she replies that she doesn’t “play at life” and takes everything seriously. Yet, for former chess players, it can be hard to accept that in life, exchanges can be a win-win – unlike in chess. Is it easy for a liberal to be in power? What are the biggest challenges they face? What advantages does a woman bring to politics? Find the answers to these questions in the Beyond Economics and Back podcast.
