What Advice Would Plato Give to Today’s Economists? | Naglis Kardelis

Plato lived 2,500 years ago. He had never seen a factory or a computer, and he could not imagine how a stock exchange or cryptocurrencies might work. Nevertheless, his ideas are extremely important when trying to understand the world of modern economics. What advice would Plato give to today’s economists?

Based on the works of Plato and other thinkers of Ancient Greece, Professor Dr. Naglis Kardelis from the Faculty of Philosophy at Vilnius University explores the phenomenon of scarcity. This concept is familiar to anyone interested in economics who has heard about “limited resources and unlimited wants.” In the conversation, N. Kardelis also shares thoughts about his own professional path as a humanities scholar and reflects on the relationship between academia and business. According to the professor, for a long time in Lithuania people from these two fields were unnecessarily distant from one another. Now is a great time for them to get to know each other better.
