When the Social Democrats are in power, it’s a good time to remember political culture, respect for people, and the meaning of dialogue — as discussed with one of the party’s founders and longtime members. On the podcast Beyond Economics and Back, three-time Speaker of the Seimas and former Panorama editor-in-chief Česlovas Juršėnas shares his insights.
The signatory of the Act of Independence remembers both uplifting and difficult moments in his life. For example, after a European basketball championship victory, a crowd tried to boo him, but Juršėnas managed to stay calm and said with his characteristic humor: “If only you worked as hard as you whistle.” The small Lithuanian Constitution in his pocket is not a talisman. For Juršėnas, it is a practical guide — a way to rely on the country’s fundamental law and to have the final word in any dispute.
To younger politicians, Juršėnas offers advice that sounds simple but requires maturity: “Know everything about something and something about everything,” communicate constantly with people, and solve problems here and now. And political culture? Debate in the chamber, but after the session, drink your coffee without anger: respect and empathy for your opponent restore meaning to politics.
On Beyond Economics and Back, LFMI president Elena Leontjeva talks with Česlovas Juršėnas about the responsibilities of politicians and citizens, humanity, and the art of political leadership.
