Ethics and the Economy: In Search of the Invisible Link

In June 2025, Vytautas Magnus University hosted an international academic conference titled “Education in an Era of Evolving Meaning” in Vilnius. The event brought together scholars, researchers, and educators to explore how changing cultural, social, and philosophical contexts are reshaping the purpose and practice of education.

As a leading institution in the humanities and social sciences, the university regularly organizes international conferences that connect academic research with broader societal challenges and interdisciplinary dialogue.

One of the key presentations of the conference, “Ethics and the Economy: In Search of the Invisible Link,” was delivered by Sigita Šilingaitė, the Head of Educational Programmes at the LFMI.

In her talk, she explored the often-overlooked relationship between moral values and economic systems. Rather than viewing economic decisions as purely technical, she emphasized their deep connection to ethical frameworks – both visible and implicit.

The presentation highlighted:

  • the role of values in shaping economic behavior and policy
  • the tension between efficiency and responsibility
  • the need to reintroduce ethical reflection into economic thinking

By examining this “invisible link,” the talk invited participants to reconsider how education can better prepare individuals to navigate complex moral dilemmas within economic life.

In the context of rapidly evolving societal meaning, the discussion underscored the importance of integrating ethics into both education and economic discourse. The presentation contributed to the conference’s broader aim: to rethink education not only as knowledge transmission, but as a space for cultivating responsible, reflective, and value-driven individuals.
