Our nervous system reacts so quickly and instinctively, as if we were still running across the African savanna. Over hundreds of thousands of years of evolution, the brain has learned to protect us – which is why it reacts impulsively, as if defending against a predator.
However, unlike our ancestors, today we can not only run – we can pause, reflect, and consciously choose how to respond. This helps us understand ourselves better, and from this self-awareness comes inner resilience – and more freedom within our own minds.
Even greater freedom emerges when we realize that we can change throughout our entire lives – from birth to death. This is possible thanks to neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to form new connections and weaken old ones that are no longer used.
In this episode of Beyond Economics and Back, Dr. Kęstutis Skauminas, neuroscientist and medical director at the “Eglė” sanatorium, talks with LFMI President Elena Leontjeva about training the brain like a muscle, building inner resilience, and discovering more freedom in your own mind.
