LFMI among the best in Penn’s 2013 Global Think Tank Index

Lithuanian Free Market Institute (LFMI) is among the best think tanks in Central and Eastern Europe and the world, shows newly announced think tanks’ index  „2013 Global Go To Think Tanks“. Researchers at University of Pennsylvania (USA) assessed 6826 think tanks of 182 countries. LFMI ranks 11th in  the region of Central and Eastern Europe and 121st in the world ranking.

“We are among the leaders in our region and among of the top two percent in the world. What is more, we maintain this position already for several years. We work har for this test all year round, and are glad to see that our work is being noticed not only in Lithuania, Europe, but also worldwide”, claims the president of LFMI Žilvinas Šilėnas.

LFMI was also ranked among the world’s 80 best think tanks in domestic policy category.

“Primarily,  we aim to contribute to a better understanding of the Lithuanian economy and social problems and provide better solutions. However, we also actively provide EU policy assessments”, says Ž. Šilėnas.

“Global Go To Think Tanks Report,” the most comprehensive ranking of the world’s top think tanks. The index has become the gold standard for think tanks around the world and is widely cited by governments, donors, journals and policymakers.  University of Pennsylvania researchers interviewed nearly 2,000 academicians, journalists, public policy experts, decision-makers from 120 countries.

“In the world filled with tweets and sound bites that are often superficial and politically charged, it is critical to know where to turn for sound policy proposals that address the complex policy issues that policymakers and the public face,” said James McGann, director of Penn’s Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program. “This Index is designed to help identify and recognize the leading centers of excellence in public policy research around the world.”

Ž. Šilėnas says that LFMI not only enjoys being among the best, but also actively support and traun newly established think tanks. For instance, for the fifth year LFMI “Think Tank School” is being organized. It attracts participants from both Western and Eastern Europe or Asia. During the courses NGO management, communication and other competencies are developed. This year courses will take place in Germany, Berlin.

The report is compiled with assistance from more than 1,500 peer institutions and experts from the print and electronic media, academia, public and private donor institutions and governments around the world and ranks the top 150 global think tanks across four general categories:

  • Top Think Tanks in the World
  • Top Think Tanks by Region
  • Top Think Tanks by Area of Research
  • Top Think Tanks by Special Achievement
