Think Tank Fundraiser Summit, Vilnius 2016

On November 18-19th, 2016 the Lithuanian Free Market Institute in partnership with Atlas Network organized an international Think Tank Fundraiser Summit. The Summit gathered think tank fundraising professionals from 17 countries and featured eight discussion sessions on fundraising models, practices, and looming trends.

“Our goal is to strengthen the think tanks around Europe, to share our experience. We all have the same goals to promote ideas of individual freedom, responsibility and free market. While teaching others we improve our skills too. Attracting financial resources for free market think tanks is very important for the success of their work”, – said Edita Maslauskaitė, Vicepresident of the Lithuanian Free Market Institute.

The European Academy for Intellectual Entrepreneurs is a joint program of the Lithuanian Free Market Institute and Atlas Network to identify and train talented young people for professional careers in the liberty movement in Europe.

Think Tank Fundraiser Summit

The Lithuanian Free Market Institute and Atlas Network are inviting you to spend two days discussing how to best attract more financial resources for the European liberty movement.

This tailor-made summit will feature eight discussion sessions on fundraising models, practices, and looming trends for the exchange of ideas among think tank CEOs and fundraising professionals from across Europe.

Trainers

LehmanJoseph G. Lehman is president of the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, an independent, nonprofit research and educational institute in Michigan. The Mackinac Center is the largest of more than 50 affiliated think tanks that focus primarily on state economic policy.

Lehman is a leader among state-based public policy experts. In 2013 the State Policy Network recognized him with its Roe Award for leadership, innovation and accomplishments in public policy. He has trained more than 600 think tank executives from 47 states and 47 countries in strategic planning, communications and fundraising.
Lehman first joined the Mackinac Center in 1995. He later became vice president for communications at the Cato Institute in Washington, D.C., before returning to the Mackinac Center as its executive vice president. He became president in 2008.
Lehman’s commentary on public policy has been carried by The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, National Public Radio, National Journal, National Review, Investor’s Business Daily, Wired magazine, and nearly every daily Michigan newspaper.

He is a director of the National Taxpayers Union and the education reform organizations Legislative Education Action Drive Foundation and Parents in Charge. He is an advisory board member of the Niskanen Center, a Washington, D.C. think tank, and the Franklin Center for Government and Public Integrity.

Matthew SinclairMatthew Sinclair,
Senior Consultant at Europe Economics, having joined in January 2014.

Before joining Europe Economics Matthew worked at the Tax Payers’ Alliance (TPA) in a number of roles, including most recently Chief Executive. His responsibilities included being lead editor of the 2020 Tax Commission; a major joint project on tax policy with the Institute of Directors; authoring two books; ‘How to Cut Public Spending’ and ‘Let Them Eat Carbon’; and representing the TPA in the national and international media and parliamentary hearings.

edEdita Maslauskaitė, Lithuanian Free Market Institute.

Edita joined LFMI in 1999. Since May 2006 appointed vice president to head LFMI’s fundraising and administration. Edita has extensive experience in strategic planning, maintaining the strategy and evaluating the performance of the think tank.

Edita develops and maintains contacts with LFMI‘s supporters and the business community. Since 2009, Edita runs the program European Academy for Intellectual Entrepreneurs jointly organized by LFMI and the Atlas Leadership Academy.

Zilvinas Silenas, Lithuanian Free Market Institutezil

Zilvinas joined the Lithuanian Free Market Institute (LFMI) in 2006 after graduating from Wesleyan University, USA. In 2011 appointed President. Involved in legislation through participation in work-groups, “Sunrise” and “Sunset” commissions. Zilvinas has worked as teacher of economics, adviser to CEO of Energy Company and elected official of local government. While in LFMI Zilvinas was an instructor in 6 Think Tanks start-up trainings and multiple other workshops.

aneta ttAneta Vaine, Lithuanian Free Market Institute

Aneta is a director of development and programs. She works with international organizations, funds, and partners.

Since 2009 Aneta worked at International School of Law and Business (Vilnius) as a head of International Relations and Project Management Centre. From 1994 till 2004 Aneta worked at LFMI and over time had various responsibilities – was responsible for project management, public relations, and policy analysis.

Dr. Tim Evans,
former President and Director General of the Centre for the New Europe (2002-2005) in Brussels.

Between 1993 and early 2002 he was the Executive Director of Public Affairs at the Independent Healthcare Association in London where he oversaw the political affairs and public relations of the UK’s independent health and social care providers. In that role he was widely credited as being the major driving force behind the ‘2000 Concordat’ which was described by the Financial Times as the most “historic deal in 50 years of British healthcare”. Prior to that, in 1991-1992, he was the Chief Economic and Political Adviser to the Slovak Prime Minister – Dr. Jan Carnogursky – and was Head of the Prime Minister’s Policy Unit. In the late 1980s he was the Assistant Director of the Foundation for Defence Studies.

Today, as well as working with The Cobden Centre, he is the Chairman of the Economic Policy Centre, Chairman of Global Health Futures Ltd, a Consultant Director and a Senior Fellow with the Adam Smith Institute.

jake jones

Jake Jones, IRI Resident Country Director, Lithuania

Jake Jones joined IRI in 2007. Following his graduation from Southern Oregon University, Jones served in three countries with the United States Peace Corps – Uzbekistan, Morocco, and Azerbaijan. Jones worked at the community level in the local languages to encourage citizen involvement in local development. After the Peace Corps, Jones worked with CHF for the economic revitalization of mountainous rural villages in Azerbaijan. Jones served as IRI’s Resident Country Director in Baku, Azerbaijan until 2010 when he moved to IRI’s Tbilisi, Georgia office. He is currently the country director for the office in Vilnius, Lithuania.

LFMI for the first time held Think Tank School for advanced. On June 25-27, 2014 attendants and lecturers gathered in France, in Faculty of Economics and Management, Aix-Marseille University.

The seminar focused on policy advocacy and communication and was delivered by experienced professionals.

Matthew Elliott is one of the foremost political campaigners working in Westminster, having led the hugely successful ‘No’ campaign against the Alternative Vote in the 2011 referendum. He is also the founder of groups as diverse as the TaxPayers’ Alliance, civil liberties campaign Big Brother Watch and, and most recently, Business for Britain – the leading business group in the UK campaigning for a better deal from the European Union.

Described frequently as a “campaigning genius” (by Evening Standard columnist Matthew D’Ancona) and a “redoubtable campaigner and propagandist” (by former Labour MP Dennis MacShane), Matthew is also sought after as an electoral strategist and has worked with political parties in Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Ghana, Maldives, Serbia, and Ukraine.

Veronique de Rugy is an adjunct scholar at the Cato Institute and a senior research fellow at the Mercatus Center. Her research interests include tax competition, financial privacy, bioterrorism, and fiscal sovereignty issues. She has testified numerous times in front of Congress on the effects of fiscal stimulus, debt and deficits, and regulation on the economy.

She is the coauthor of Action ou Taxation, published in Switzerland in 1996. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Paris-Sorbonne and previously directed academic programs for the Institute for Humane Studies — Europe in France.

The Trainers

Kakha BendukidzeKakha Bendukidze, Free University
Kakha Bendukidze is in 1990s the Russian businessman, in second half of 2000s the designer of the Georgian reforms, and currently the founder, the main sponsor and the chairman of the Private Free University in Tbilisi. He is also known as a committed libertarian and strong supporter of market economy, deregulation and privatization.

 

 

Matthew ElliotMatthew Elliot, Taxpayers’ Alliance
Matthew Elliot is the chief executive of the TaxPayer’s Alliance (TPA). He recently co-authored the book, The Bumper Book of Government Waste, which sold 20,000 copies. In an effort to provide positive incentives for politicians to lower taxes and carry out other sound policies the TPA provides polls, advocacy and media exposure. Their group now has 15,000 supporters at the grassroots level advocating for reform and lower taxes!

 

Frederik Cyrus RoederFrederik Cyrus Roeder, European Students for Liberty
Frederik Cyrus Roeder is Managing Director of the management consulting firm Healthcare Solutions and Visiting Professor at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences. He studied business and health economics in Germany, Slovenia and China. Frederik Roeder is member of the Executive Board of Students For Liberty and Co-initiator of European Students For Liberty.

 

Rūta VainienėRūta Vainienė, Lithuanian Free Market Institute
From 2008 Rūta Vainienė is president of the Lithuanian Free Market Institute. She has worked at LFMI since its inception in 1990. From 1999 until May 2004 Rūta led LFMI‘s research team. Ms. Vainienė has provided a marked input to developing conceptual frameworks for monetary, banking, tax and deregulation reforms. She was a member of governmental task forces preparing a legal and institutional basis for the securities market, commercial banking, and the monetary system.
Since January 2006, Rūta Vainienė is F. M Sands Fellow in Political Economy at the Centre for Global Economic Growth of Freedomworks Foundation.

Gia JandieriGia Jandieri, Vice-President, New Economic School
Gia Jandieri is Vice-President of the New Economic School – Georgia. He graduated from the Georgian Polytechnic University and also Tbilisi State University. He worked for Parliament, the Central Election Commission, the Chamber of Control and then at OSGF and NES-G.

Edita Maslauskaitė, Lithuanian Free Market Institute
Edita Maslauskaitė joined LFMI in 1999. In May 2006 she was appointed vice president to head LFMI’s fundraising and administration. Since 2002 she has served as development officer. Until then she worked as public relations officer and administrator. Edita Maskauskaitė is responsible for developing and maintaining contacts with LFMI‘s supporters and the business community. She is also responsible for the Institute’s administrative affairs.
Edita holds an MA in business administration from Vilnius Gediminas Technical University. In 2004 she did an internship with the Centre for New Europe, a leading free-market think-tank in Brussels.

Paata SheshelidzePaata Sheshelidze, President, New Economic School
Paata Sheshelidze graduated from Tbilisi State University (Georgia), with a Master’s degree in Macroeconomics. He has been involved in a number of national and international projects. Mr. Sheshelidze worked for the Ministry of Finance, Parliament, the Road Foundation, and for other institutions. His main area of expertise is macroeconomics with a focus on monetary policy, institutional frameworks and public finance management. Mr. Sheshelidze was also involved in developing basic models for education, pension systems, waste management, public management, public finance and monetary reforms.
